It is something much more funny: It is nothing more and nothing less than the caipirinha cocktail, a Brazilian classic, but not the traditional flavorotherwise passion fruit. It’s actually an interesting sounding mix and worth checking out.
Where did caipirinha come from?
The Caipirinha It is a drink related to slavery and to the cultivation of sugar cane. Slaves drank garapa and wealthy families cachaza at important events. Over time, cachaça began to be mixed with fruit juices in what were known as “batidas”. Its main ingredient is cachaça (filter cake), but it also has a subtle lime or lemon, a fingertip or two of lalo, sugar and ice.
The name of beverage It is placed around 1900 and derives from a mixture of “caipira” (a term that refers to the peasants who lived in the woods) and “Curupirinha“(Curupira was a mystical demon who lived in the forests, whose diminutive is”curupirinha“. The word refers to the drunken state in which we begin to have blurred vision.
For its part, the passion fruit, which is considered indigenous Dominican Republicbut also from countries like Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, Brazil, Paraguay, Bolivia, Uruguay and from the north of Argentina. It is also known as “passion fruit”, but not because it is an aphrodisiac fruit (although it has become famous), but because of its resemblance to the crown of thorns, which could have been worn by Jesus Christ, according to the Spanish colonizers. And this drink tastes divine, so let’s get down to business!
- 1 bottle of cachaça
- 1 glass of passion fruit juice
- 4 tablespoons of white sugar
- 1 lime
How do you prepare yourself?
- Cut the lime into about 8 segments. Now wet the rim of the glass with each lime wedge and place it in the mortar.
- Then mash them with 4 tablespoons of white sugar.
- Fill the glass you intend to use with 4 ice cubes, or crushed ice to the top, and add the cachaca.
- If you don’t have cachaca, you can use rum. Next, add the lemon juice mixed with the sugar and finally the passion fruit juice.
- Mix well to combine ingrediants.
