“Fruit makes you fat”, “fruit has a lot of sugar”, “you shouldn’t eat fruit at night.” Enough! Fruit is a vitamin-rich superfood and is a natural delight, with sugars that are good for your health.
In fact, a recent study found that prunes can have an additional benefit: helping to take care of their bones.
Consuming 6 to 12 of these fruits per day can reduce the pro-inflammatory mediators that contribute to bone loss in postmenopausal women. This was revealed by research from the Program for Integrative and Biomedical Physiology and the Departments of Nutritional Sciences and Kinesiology of Pennsylvania State University.
The study sampled postmenopausal women into three groups. The first, control, did not consume plums; the second ate six of these fruits every day and the third 12.
Plum can also reduce inflammatory conditions
Janhavi Damani, an author of the study, said this finding could position plum as a promising nutritional option for preventing increased inflammation.
Fruits and vegetables rich in bioactive compounds such as phenolic acid, flavonoids and carotenoids can help protect the body from osteoporosis.
“Plums, in particular, contain polyphenols that can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, both of which contribute to bone loss,” explained Kelsey Sackmann, dietician and nutritionist, for the blog Eat This, Not That.
The nutritionist warns that, like any fruit that is in a ripe state such as raisins, they have a higher concentration of sugar. Therefore, you must be aware of its consumption.
He recommends adding them, for example, to a yogurt to be consumed for breakfast, even in salads or on a pizza.
