How to recognize lizards

There are two types of home invasions in the United States. These are the common house gecko and the Carolina anole (also known as the green anole).

Here’s an overview of each:

Common House Gecko
These lizards are common in the United States, but tend to congregate in warmer climates. They have long, slender bodies that grow from 3 to 6 inches, and flat, arrow-shaped skulls.

They are usually brown, green, or gray in color with a fine mottled pattern. Male anoles have pink throat fans. In winter, they are more likely to go indoors.

Carolina Anole
Carolina anoles are small lizards that grow from 5 to 8.” They are green or brown in color depending on environmental conditions.

If the lizard is brown, there may be several faint markings on its back. Like the common house gecko, males have a pink tube fan that helps attract mates.

These lizards usually live in trees, but can be found anywhere. They especially like to sit on patios and roofs and will come indoors in cold weather.
