Early Warning Signs of Lupus You Should Know

3. Joint Pain and Stiffness

Lupus frequently affects the joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness, especially in the morning. This symptom is often mistaken for arthritis. Unlike some other forms of arthritis, lupus-related joint pain may not cause permanent damage in its early stages but can progress if untreated.

4. Skin Rash or Lesions

A characteristic sign of lupus is the butterfly-shaped rash that appears across the cheeks and nose. However, not all lupus patients develop this rash. Other skin symptoms may include sun sensitivity, red patches, or sores that worsen with sunlight exposure.

5. Hair Loss

Thinning hair or alopecia can occur early in lupus. Hair loss may result from inflammation of the scalp or a side effect of the disease’s systemic effects. In some cases, hair may grow back once the condition is managed, but scarring can lead to permanent loss.

6. Chest Pain or Shortness of Breath

Lupus can cause inflammation in the lining of the heart (pericarditis) or lungs (pleuritis), leading to chest pain and breathing difficulties. These symptoms may become more pronounced during deep breaths or physical activity.

7. Cognitive Issues and Mood Changes

Individuals with lupus may experience brain fog, memory issues, or difficulty concentrating. Mood swings, anxiety, and depression are also common, possibly due to the disease’s physical and emotional toll.
